IFS (Internal Family Systems)
Internal Family Systems Therapy uses the exploration and harmonization of the different parts of yourself to achieve balance, healing, and inner peace.
What is IFS?
IFS (Internal Family Systems) is a transformative, evidence-based therapeutic approach that helps individuals understand and heal their inner emotional world by exploring the “parts” of their personality. Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, IFS views each person’s inner world similar to a family: a group of parts that make up a whole. One’s inner parts are distinct subpersonalities with perspective, feelings, and needs that lead to action. Sometimes these parts hold many different thoughts and feelings concurrently and may even disagree with one another. The goal of IFS is to bring harmony to these parts by connecting with the core “Self,” which embodies wisdom, compassion, and balance.
Key Features of IFS:
- Parts Work: IFS views the mind as composed of multiple “parts,” such as wounded inner children, protective managers, and firefighters. These parts often conflict but can work together harmoniously when guided by the Self.
- Core Self: IFS posits that everyone has a compassionate, wise, and undamaged “Self” that can lead the internal system toward healing.
- Non-Pathologizing: IFS does not label any part of the mind as “bad” or “broken.” Instead, all parts are seen as having positive intentions, even if their methods are maladaptive.
- Healing Through Self-Leadership: The Self connects with and leads the parts to resolve inner conflict and release burdens (traumas, fears, or negative beliefs).
- Trauma-Informed: IFS is particularly effective in addressing trauma by helping individuals reprocess and release painful experiences without re-traumatization.
Is IFS Right for Me?
How It Works:
- Clients are supported to identify and acknowledge the different parts of the inner system.
- A relationship between the Self and the parts is facilitated by the therapist.
- Wounded or traumatized parts are unburdened, freeing them from the negative emotions and beliefs they carry.
- Balance and harmony within the internal system is restored.
