Understanding ADHD

Everyone experiences moments of distraction or difficulty concentrating, but for many individuals, these challenges are a persistent part of daily life. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is often misunderstood and stigmatized in our society, yet it is a very real condition that affects millions of people worldwide.

ADHD is real, and your struggles are valid. According to the Canadian ADHD Resource Alliance (CADDRA), ADHD impacts approximately 5-9% of children and 3-5% of adults. Living with ADHD can be overwhelming, as it affects multiple areas of life, including work, relationships, and daily routines. Challenges with focus, organization, and impulsivity can create significant barriers to achieving personal and professional goals.

Here at Clearview Counselling, we offer expert guidance and professional support in a safe, non-judgmental environment. Our Calgary therapists are trained to help you explore your experiences, develop practical strategies, and unlock your potential for success.

What Is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects an individual’s ability to focus, control impulses, and regulate energy levels. While ADHD is often diagnosed in childhood, many adults live with undiagnosed ADHD or continue to experience symptoms throughout their lives.

Common symptoms of ADHD include:

•Difficulty sustaining attention

•Forgetfulness or frequently losing items

•Struggles with time management or meeting deadlines

•Restlessness and an inability to stay seated or still

•Interrupting conversations or acting impulsively

ADHD presents in different forms, including:

Predominantly Inattentive Presentation: Marked by difficulties in sustaining focus and completing tasks.

Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation: Characterized by excessive activity, impulsiveness, and difficulty sitting still.

Combined Presentation: A mixture of inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.

What Causes ADHD?

ADHD has no single cause. Research suggests that genetic factors, brain structure and function, prenatal influences, and environmental factors all play a role. ADHD is not the result of poor parenting or laziness; it is a neurological condition that requires understanding and proper support.

ADHD Across the Lifespan

While ADHD is often associated with children, adults can also experience significant challenges. Symptoms in adults may manifest as chronic lateness, disorganization, emotional regulation issues, and difficulties maintaining relationships. For both children and adults, untreated ADHD can lead to feelings of frustration, low self-esteem, and struggles with academic, personal, and professional goals.
